Abstract: Many workers lost their jobs in the mechanized harvesting of sugarcane process, but there is another category of worker who has been ruled out even before the predominance of the machines. Those who are sick in the cane fields, unemployed migrants and unfeasible to work due to illness. Despite this impossibility, these former sugarcane workers were unable to access the right to disability retirement by the INSS. Front of the box production restructuring which further increases the exploitation of the worker and the understanding that the health- disease process is due to a social situation experienced by individuals, this project has the hypothesiz that the work occupies a foundational role of social identity of these rural workers, and that the non-recognition of the impossibility of the work (and the idea of ‘tramp’) generates a moral distress for them. The opening of judicial proceedings against the plants would then be a form of resistance against this moral suffering. From these assumptions, the present proposal aims to understand the impact the work has on non- subjectivity of ex-sugarcane cutters in the region of Vale do Jequitinhonha/MG, and the forms of resistance of these social agents.
